In this book the reader will find the full version of Puff!, a text that seems to be the transcription of a lecture—inserted images act as slides, and it uses a language that addresses an audience. The discourse’s central focus is the Sacco chair, an object designed in 1968 by three Italian designers that was marketed as a revolution: the embodiment of a new lifestyle, disobedient with the “bourgeois” etiquette. The idea behind the chair become popular right away and evolved to become what is nowadays known as a beanbag: a bag full of small polystyrene beads that let it adapt to the body of the person sitting on it. The result is a somehow alarmist analysis of this soft object. A critique to formlessness through which a series of associations run: from speech to fatigue, from ergonomics to labor, or from testicles to saliva. As he did in Bentwood—previous book of the author Puff! is a clear sequel of—Gabriel Pericàs scrutinises various episodes of the history of modern design with a speculative yet captivating methodology that transports the reader, only to leave them asking: “how did we get here?”

En este libro el lector encontrará la versión íntegra de Puff!,un texto que parece ser la transcripción de una conferencia —intercala imágenes a modo de diapositivas y usa un lenguaje que se dirige a un auditorio. El eje central del discurso es la silla Sacco, un objeto diseñado en 1968 por tres arquitectos italianos y que se presentó al público como una revolución: la encarnación de un nuevo estilo de vida, desobediente con los modos de etiqueta “burgueses”. La idea tras esta silla no tardó en popularizarse y terminó derivando en lo que hoy conocemos como un puff: una bolsa de tela rellena de pequeñas bolas de poliestireno que le permiten adaptarse al cuerpo de la persona que se siente en ella. El resultado es un análisis algo alarmista de este objeto blando. Una crítica al amorfismo que, sin embargo, se ve atravesada por diversas asociaciones: del habla al cansancio, de la ergonomía al trabajo o de los testículos a la saliva. Como ya hiciera en Madera Curvada —anterior libro del autor del que Puff! es una clara secuela— Gabriel Pericàs somete a escrutinio varios episodios del diseño de mobiliario moderno con una metodología especulativa, a la par que cautivadora, que transporta al lector a un lugar desconocido para enseguida abandonarlo a su suerte: “¿Cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí?”.
